8 Tips from a Primary School Dance Coordinator
My journey with Groove Nation began over a decade ago, and since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with them at two schools, where they’ve become an integral part of our dance program. If you’re considering working with Groove Nation or already partnering with them, here’s my roadmap to ensure you get the most out of this fantastic collaboration.
1. Trust Their Expertise and Leadership
I first heard about Groove Nation through a colleague who worked at my former primary school, which coincidentally was also Groove Nation’s very first school. My colleague couldn’t stop praising them—the innovative choreography, exceptional communication, and overall positive experience were highlights. That glowing recommendation was all I needed to propose bringing them on board at my previous school, and after seeing their incredible work firsthand, I knew I wanted them to be part of the dance program when I transitioned to my current school.
My Tip: Trust Groove Nation’s leadership and passion. They know what they’re doing, and their professionalism and deep commitment to delivering high-quality dance programs are unmatched. They’ll help you create a dance program you’ll be proud of.
2. Seize Opportunities to Expand the Partnership
Our journey with Groove Nation began in 2019 when they were brought in to lead our Year 6 Farewell Dance program. After being so impressed by their work, our principal and I expanded the partnership in 2020 to include students from years three to five through the Dance Fit program, while continuing the Year 6 Farewell Dance. Soon after, Groove Nation was working with our younger students (K-2) for showcase performances and the older students for school musicals.
My Tip: Don’t hesitate to grow your collaboration. Start with a program that fits your current needs and build from there. Groove Nation has a wide range of offerings, from regular class instruction to extracurricular activities, so there’s plenty of room to scale up based on student interest and success.
3. Align with Your School’s Goals and Culture
When I first approached Groove Nation in 2019, it felt natural given the rave reviews from my colleagues and our school’s desire for an energetic, inclusive dance program. Groove Nation not only delivered high-energy dance classes but also matched their curriculum with the school’s values, bringing together creativity and student well-being.
My Tip: Work closely with Groove Nation to tailor the program to fit your school’s unique culture. Whether it’s emphasizing fitness, teamwork, or creative expression, they can adapt their choreography and lesson plans to align with your goals.
4. Foster a Collaborative Planning Process
One thing that has stood out in our partnership with Groove Nation is the consultative and collaborative planning process. Whether it’s scheduling, program development, or adapting choreography, there’s always an open dialogue between Groove Nation and our staff, ensuring everyone is on the same page. They actively seek feedback, making adjustments to fit our needs, and that level of cooperation has been key to our success.
My Tip: Keep communication flowing. Groove Nation values feedback from everyone involved—teachers, parents, and students. This two-way communication strengthens the partnership and allows for continuous improvement, ensuring a smooth operation of the program.
5. Integrate Groove Nation Across Curricular and Extracurricular Activities
Our relationship with Groove Nation grew from a single dance program to a school-wide initiative, including showcases, musicals, and extracurricular teams. By 2021, we had expanded to four competitive teams, with both senior and junior dancers representing the school. The success of these programs, especially during the challenges of the COVID years, speaks to Groove Nation’s ability to adapt and deliver results.
My Tip: Consider integrating Groove Nation into multiple aspects of your school’s performing arts program. From yearly showcases to extracurricular teams, their involvement can boost student confidence and even earn your school recognition at competitions and festivals.
6. Support Well-Being Through Dance
Beyond the choreography and performances, one of the most profound impacts Groove Nation has had at our school is on student well-being. I’ve seen firsthand how their programs have helped students manage anxiety, build confidence, and improve peer relationships. Dance has become a highlight of the week for many students, not just as a creative outlet, but as a source of joy and connection.
My Tip: Recognise the holistic benefits of dance. Groove Nation doesn’t just teach steps—they foster an environment that supports mental and emotional health. If well-being is a priority at your school, dance can be an effective tool to address those needs.
7. Be Hands-On and Stay Organised
As the primary point of contact between Groove Nation and our school, I’ve found that organisation and clear communication are critical to keeping everything on track. Schools are busy places, and staying on top of schedules, rehearsals, and deadlines is essential to the success of the program. Being actively involved in rehearsals and helping students refine their skills has also boosted performance quality and student confidence.
My Tip: Be a hands-on coordinator. Attend rehearsals, guide students, and offer extra practice sessions before big performances. It’s these little touches that make a huge difference in refining skills and building excitement.
8. Celebrate the Successes and Keep Growing
One of my most memorable moments with Groove Nation was when our junior team—made up of year 1 and year 2 students—won their division at the Sydney Eisteddfod in 2022. Performing barefoot on the Sydney Opera House stage, they danced their hearts out and won the People’s Choice award at Dance of Champions. It’s not always about winning, but seeing the joy and pride in our students’ eyes is unforgettable.
My Tip: Celebrate each achievement, big or small. These moments of success—whether on a competition stage or at a school showcase—are what make the journey worthwhile.
Final Thoughts
Working with Groove Nation has been a transformative experience for our school, and I wouldn’t change anything for the world. My advice to other coordinators and principals is simple: trust Groove Nation wholeheartedly. They are passionate, professional, and dedicated to their craft, and they’ll deliver a program that you and your students will love.
